Then he said something really profound which I have never forgotten. “You can’t get to the top of that ladder in one step. But you can get to the bottom in one step.” I’m not sure my dad knew at the time that he was providing me with a piece of advice that I would use throughout my adult life.
Every rung on that ladder was important, and there was nothing more important in my world at that precise time than getting up and down that ladder safely, and doing that job correctly. Why would I think about anything else? What else could I do but what was in front of me. I needed to concentrate.
